The birth of DuVernay's daughter occurred on the 24th of August on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art from her aunt Denise. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the house of a member of the jury, and then look through their trash. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotional campaigns, such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Beauty Collective.
